Job Summary

Sky Island School is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Part-Time Agriculture Teacher to lead hands-on, engaging lessons in sustainable agriculture and permaculture principles. This unique role offers the opportunity to teach students about environmental stewardship and food systems through real-life applications involving our greenhouse, goats, and chickens.

The ideal candidate will have experience in agriculture education, permaculture, or environmental science and a talent for working with elementary students in an outdoor, hands-on learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate agriculture lessons for K–5 students, grounded in permaculture principles.

  • Facilitate and supervise hands-on projects in the greenhouse and outdoor learning areas.

  • Incorporate care and management of goats, chickens, and plant life into instruction.

  • Promote environmental stewardship, sustainability, and responsibility through experiential learning.

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students and animals during class time.

  • Collaborate with school staff to support cross-curricular connections (e.g., science, health, sustainability).

  • Maintain cleanliness and order in the greenhouse and animal enclosures.

  • Encourage curiosity, respect for nature, and teamwork among students.

  • Uphold the school’s values and mission in all interactions with students and staff.

Qualifications

  • Experience in agriculture, gardening, environmental education, or permaculture required.

  • Experience working with children, particularly in an educational or outdoor setting.

  • Familiarity with the care of small livestock (goats, chickens) and greenhouse plant systems.

  • Strong classroom management and communication skills.

  • Ability to create engaging, hands-on learning opportunities.

  • Organized, dependable, and safety-conscious.

  • Enthusiasm for sustainability, outdoor education, and student growth.

  • IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card required (or ability to obtain).
